Reasons for Abdominal Pain During the First Trimester of Pregnancy

Abdominal pain during the first trimester of pregnancy is not a good sign for a pregnant woman. This is because the first trimester is one of the most sensitive times of a pregnancy. The first trimester is the time when the usual slew of pregnancy symptoms like morning sickness and hormonal abnormalities abound. It is also during this time that the body starts to fine-tune the hormonal balance so that the body does not reject the growing fetus.

...a sign that a spontaneous abortion could be about to take place. There is also a very rare condition that sometimes occurs in pregnancy called an ectopic pregnancy. Although this is a rare condition it is a serious condition.

In this condition, the fetus starts to develop outside of the uterus and therefore cannot mature normally. In such cases, it is necessary to undergo emergency surgery or it could be fatal to the mother.

Reasons for Abdominal Pain During Pregnancy First Trimester

After an egg is fertilized, it latches on to the endometrium from where the amniotic sac and placenta form to support the growing fetus. The endometrium is a uterine lining that covers the whole uterus and some parts of the fallopian tube as well. When the fertilized egg falls on the fallopian tubes, the fetus will then start to burrow into the surrounding tissue and cause massive bleeding. This will eventually result in something called a tubal abortion where the fetus is then expelled. In most cases of a miscarriage, this is what happens and it is a risk that nearly every woman faces in her pregnancy. Another cause of abdominal pain during the first trimester is a spontaneous miscarriage. This is something that can occur when there is a chromosomal problem with the fetus and the body will subsequently terminate the pregnancy. This is nearly always the case when there is a defective chromosome from one of the parents or when the pregnancy is attempted later in life, especially in the late thirties and forties. This is the body’s own way of regulating embryonic growth and since some defects cannot be corrected the pregnancy is usually terminated.

Some of the other reasons for a miscarriage happening include a problem with the levels of progesterone. Low levels of progesterone will immediately signal the next menstrual period and an abortion will immediately occur with the fetal contents being expelled shortly after wards. This is a problem that can occur with the use of a variety of drugs and even excess vitamin C intake can cause this problem.
