It is a well known fact that itching during pregnancy is a very common complaint, especially in the abdominal and the chest area. The reason that most women experience itching during pregnancy is that the skin on their abdominal area expands, in order to accommodate the growing baby. The severity of the itchiness may vary; in some women it could be mild itching, which occurs in spurts whereas in others, the itchiness could be so severe that it could cause sleepless nights or could keep them from performing day to day activities.

There are also some women that mainly experience itching during pregnancy at night, on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. This could be an indication of an increase in the levels of bile salts in the body, from the liver.

In most instances, women face itching during pregnancy second trimester. Itching during pregnancy first trimester is quite a rare occurrence. In case the itchiness is too severe and is accompanied by other symptoms like the development of hives or blisters on the arms and legs, then it may be best to consult a doctor at the earliest. These symptoms are usually an indication a serious medical condition, known as pemphigoid gestation. Hence, this type of itching during pregnancy third trimester or even first trimester could lead to premature labor or even retarded fetal growth.

In case there are other unfavorable symptoms that are experienced along with the itchiness, it may be necessary to consult a doctor for treatment that can help relieve them. However, in case women only experience itching during pregnancy because of dry skin problems, it is more common to use simple and natural home remedies, to alleviate the discomfort.

Most women are asked to avoid taking any medication or antibiotics when they are pregnant, in order to avoid any adverse side effects on their babies. Fortunately, there are several itching during pregnancy remedies that can help women alleviate some of their discomfort. Given below, are some of the most common home remedies that can help relieve itching during pregnancy:

  • Avoiding a shower or a bath with hot water, since it dries the skin, further aggravating the itchiness
  • Using soap and other skin products that are not scented, as most of them contain harsh chemicals which cause skin irritation and itchiness.
  • Applying a strong body moisturizer on the skin, immediately after a bath, when the skin is still a bit damp and moist
  • Drinking a lot of water during the day, to keep the skin moist and hydrated internally.
  • Following a well balanced diet, as proper nutrition improves the overall health of the skin
  • Dressing in the right way, which mainly includes loose cotton clothes that allow the skin to breathe properly.

Most of the home remedies for itching during pregnancy mentioned above are fairly safe, but it is best to consult a doctor before using any of them. In case a woman experiences any problems or if the symptoms worsen after using any of these remedies, it is best to stop immediately and inform the doctor about it.
