Acne during pregnancy is one of the symptoms many pregnant mothers experience. Even women who have never had acne before may develop pimples, whiteheads and blackheads during pregnancy. The causes of acne during pregnancy can all be attributed to hormonal changes. Acne in pregnant women is a common occurrence; however immense caution must be exercised when using any medications as it could affect the baby's health.

In the early stages of pregnancy, there is a high level of the hormone progesterone in the body. This hormone functions much like the male hormones and produces androgens. Androgens affect the sebaceous glands and cause them to produce more oil or sebum.

This tends to cause clogging of the pores, making acne breakouts possible. By the end of the second trimester, the acne problem usually comes under control. Women whose skin is usually clear and problem free will observe that the acne disappears by itself after childbirth. It may, however, persist in women who breastfeed their babies. Women who have always faced problems with their skin may find that the acne is more severe and takes longer to clear. In such cases, the doctor may prescribe certain acne medications. Acne can develop on any area of the body including the face, chest, neck and back. Back acne during pregnancy can be especially difficult to deal with as it is hard to reach.

Treat Acne During Pregnancy

In all cases of acne during pregnancy, treatment must be done only after consulting a doctor. Many commercial medications contain ingredients which can enter the bloodstream and lead to birth defects. The best way to keep acne under control is to practice proper skin care.

It is necessary to cleanse the face twice or thrice daily with a mild cleanser. This will help to keep the sebum levels in control. There are also many natural remedies for acne during pregnancy. Tomato helps to reduce acne and keep the skin clean. Apply the pulp of a ripe tomato to the face and allow it to stay for 15 minutes. Body acne during pregnancy can also be treated with a mixture of cinnamon powder and lemon juice. Apply the paste to the affected areas and keep it on for about 10 minutes. When treating acne during pregnancy, one can also use sandalwood powder and rose water. Add a couple of drops of rose water to a teaspoon of sandalwood powder. Mix well and apply to the skin. Keep it on for 10 minutes and then wash with lukewarm water.
