It is quite normal to feel fatigue during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. Most women feel so tired that they may find it tough to carry out even simple daily activities.

How to Fight Fatigue During Pregnancy

There is no need to get unduly worried, since this is a common phenomenon. Proper sleep, diet and exercise play a crucial role during pregnancy. Here are a few ways to beat fatigue during pregnancy.

  • Heed your body’s signals. Do not over-exert yourself. If you are feeling very tired, take a short rest in between your work schedule. Even a sofa or a couch in the office may help you take the weight off your feet and make you feel rested and refreshed.
  • Take an afternoon nap if possible, or short 15-minute catnaps throughout the day.
  • A good night’s sleep becomes even more essential during pregnancy. You need to sleep for at least nine to ten hours. Try to go to bed a little earlier than usual.
  • Create a soothing bedtime routine for yourself so that it will help you sleep better. Engage in quiet, relaxing activities like meditating, reading or listening to soft music just before you go to sleep. Or you might like a warm relaxing bath.

  • Make sure that the atmosphere in your bedroom is helpful for good sleep. Ensure that the temperature is just right, and there are no bright lights or loud noises in the bedroom.
  • Lying on your side, with a pillow to prop you up, may be helpful.
  • Do not drink coffee, tea or any caffeinated drinks in the evening, since caffeine is a stimulant and may prevent proper sleep.
  • Do not eat a heavy meal before going to bed at night, since it might cause indigestion, heartburn or discomfort.
  • A little fresh air and sunshine will energize you fight pregnancy fatigue. Get some exercise every day. A short walk outdoors will help better intake of oxygen combined with better blood circulation. Yoga and gentle stretches are equally beneficial.
  • Eat well and eat right. And that doesn’t mean snacking on fries and candy bars. You need at least 300 extra calories for your growing baby. Nutritious and healthy foods like milk, cheese, yogurt, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fish, eggs and meat will give you added energy and help you overcome pregnancy fatigue.
  • Drink lots of water to flush out toxins which sap you of energy.
