How to Quit Smoking During Pregnancy?

(April 15, 2010)

Smoking is a habit that is known to have many adverse effects. Smoking during a pregnancy can magnify the adversities that are caused by smoking because they tend to affect the growth of the child within the mothers womb. There are a number of expectant mothers who have continued to smoke during their pregnancy, and have realized the risk that they have put their children through during that particular period. Most expectant mothers who do smoke are teenagers who have had an unplanned pregnancy.

After you find out that you are expecting a child, it is imperative that you think of ways to kick the smoking habit for your benefit, as well as that of the child that is being carried in the womb. There are a number of recommended methods that have helped people to stop smoking during a pregnancy. Once the body gets used to a certain amount of nicotine per day, it needs to fulfill that desire before you can rest peacefully. Drawing the attention away from the urge to smoke is a very effective method of giving up smoking during a pregnancy. Reading about the effects that smoking can have on the life that is growing inside you is an excellent way to motivate you to give up the habit. As time goes by, the desire to smoke will lessen and soon, there won’t be the need to smoke at all. Picking up a hobby, such as reading or knitting will keep you occupied and your body free from all the harmful chemicals that cigarettes contain.

Having a partner who also gives up smoking while you are expecting a baby is also very beneficial, because he knows what you are going through and is making a sacrifice of his own for the benefit of your baby. Moral support that is given by a partner during this trying time is very necessary for you to be able to cope with the sacrifice you are making so that your unborn child experiences good health. A little exercise, carried out on a daily basis is also known to be effective in breaking the habit of smoking. A leisurely stroll in the evening will help you to breathe easily and will also help in exercising your body and keeping it toned. Expectant mothers, however, should be a little careful when exercising and should avoid all strenuous forms of exercise that could affect the baby’s development.
