Some expectant mothers find it difficult to fall asleep, while others find it difficult to stay asleep. A small number of these women are not able to get a good night’s rest at all. During pregnancy, the hormonal changes as well as the physical changes that occur in the woman’s body are responsible for insomnia to a large extent. The increase in hormones, mainly progesterone, is known to alter the normal sleep pattern and cause insomnia in the first trimester of pregnancy. As a result of this hormone, expectant mothers are known to feel drowsy throughout the day. However, during the night, they find themselves sleep deprived. Besides this, a common cause for insomnia in early pregnancy is increased frequency in the urge to urinate. As a result of the increased volume of blood in the body as well as increased blood flow to the pelvic region, the bladder needs to be emptied frequently. As a result of this, women have to wake up very often to answer nature’s call. Stress and anxiety revolving around the wellbeing of the little baby developing within the uterus as well as physical appearance is another known cause for insomnia during early pregnancy.

Insomnia in the second trimester and third trimester is mainly caused by the discomfort rendered by the expanding waistline. Most pregnant women find it difficult to get used to their new figure and end up tossing and turning for a better part of the night. In addition, many women are also known to suffer from restless leg syndrome during their pregnancy. This further hampers the ability to sleep peacefully as one would need to walk around to relieve the pain in the legs. Breathing disorders caused by the pressure exerted on the lungs by the expanding uterus as well as the discomfort triggered by water retention are other causes of insomnia during pregnancy.
