As a result of this, the blood vessels in the tissues of the pubic region get filled to capacity with blood. This condition results in swelling and tenderness of the area. Many women are known to feel excruciating pain that shoots through either one side of or both lips of the labia. Labia swelling during pregnancy can also be caused by varicose veins in the labia and this can cause a considerable amount of discomfort. At times, small boils or raised areas are also seen on the labia as a result of this. As the pregnancy progress, the weight of the uterus and developing baby exert more pressure on this region resulting in labia pain during pregnancy. In addition, the skin becomes very sensitive and slight roughness during intercourse or cleansing can lead to labia injury during pregnancy. This is generally seen in the form of a small tear in the folds of the labia. Swelling of the vaginal walls or the labia may also be caused by infection since the body is prone to infection as a result of a compromised immune system. An infection would usually be accompanied by an itchy or burning sensation, especially experienced while urinating. No form of infection should be neglected as it could cause complications that could affect the wellbeing of the baby. Hence, consulting a doctor to ascertain the actual cause of the swelling is essential.

In case the swelling is due to the increased blood flow, standing for long periods of time causes a rush of blood flow to the pubic region as a result of the gravitational pull. Hence, the best way to control the discomfort experienced as a result of swollen labia is to lie down as much as possible until the swelling subsides. Sitting in one position for extended periods of time should also be avoided. The use of a recliner may also prove to be beneficial to some extent. Walking is a good form of exercise that helps in the proper circulation of blood.
