An itchy rash during pregnancy can be alleviated by avoiding hot baths and showers. Heat can dry out the skin even more and lead to additional discomfort. Also, ensure to use mild soaps and cleansers which are gentle on the skin. After a bath, the skin should be dried gently with a soft towel. Avoid using perfumed skin care products as these can lead to irritation. Ithchiness during pregnancy can also be eased with warm oatmeal baths. Also wear comfortable and loose fitting clothes which allow circulation of air and also do not rub against the skin. A common condition during pregnancy is an itchy, red rash on the abdomen. This is known as pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy or PUPP. This condition usually occurs in the pregnancy third trimester and is observed more often in case of multiple pregnancies or first time pregnant mothers. The rash appears first on the belly near the stretch marks. This can then spread and itching all over the body is likely to occur. The arms, thighs and buttocks are areas which are commonly affected.
In some cases, excessive itching in the third or pregnancy second trimester may be indicative of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. When there is a problem in the flow of bile in the ducts in the liver, the bile salts collect in the skin and lead to itching. This type of itching can be severe and redness and irritation is likely to occur. In such cases it is important to consult a doctor immediately as this can cause a problem for the baby. Ultrasounds and blood tests may have to be done to monitor the baby. The condition subsides after delivery, although it may occur again in subsequent pregnancies.
