At times, the pain could extend to other areas too, like the shoulder and the back. However, it is also possible for neck pain during pregnancy to be an indication of a more serious problem, such as an injury or excessive weight gain, which could be a cause for concern especially when a woman is pregnant. Therefore, neck pain during pregnancy should never be left unchecked.

Treatment of neck pain during pregnancy

Unlike other women, pregnant women cannot take pain relievers or any other medication to alleviate their pain and discomfort. This does not mean the women just have to bear neck pain during pregnancy; fortunately, there are many home remedies that are quite safe if used correctly and under the supervision of a doctor. Given below are some simple remedies that can help relieve upper back or shoulder and neck pain during pregnancy:

  • Applying an ice pack to the neck every day, to reduce the pain. Alternate heat and cold therapy may also be equally effective and therefore, hot and cold compresses can be used at regular intervals.

  • Sleeping on the right pillow is very important, especially in case of pregnant women. In fact sleeping on the wrong pillow or using too many pillows to support the head is one of the causes of shoulder, upper back and neck pain during pregnancy. Instead, a pillow or two should be placed under the knees while lying down.
  • During the latter stages of pregnancy, there are certain neck exercises that can be used to alleviate the pain and discomfort. However, if any of these exercises are performed incorrectly, the pain could worsen. Therefore, it is important to consult a doctor and practice the exercises under their supervision.

In case a woman experiences severe neck pain during pregnancy, it is best for her to inform her doctor about it immediately and if possible, go through a physical checkup without any delay.
