The exact cause of a miscarriage may not always be easy to determine. There are several signs and symptoms that women notice during a miscarriage, which let them know that something is wrong with the pregnancy. It is common for women to experience vaginal bleeding, spotting, discharge that is pinkish or brownish in color, abdominal cramps and severe lower back pain during miscarriage. Most women who have had a spontaneous abortion or loss of pregnancy at any time are aware of the fact that lower back pain and miscarriage often go hand in hand. Of course, pain in the lower back does not always indicate a miscarriage. However, if the pain is sharp, stabbing and intense, it could be an indication of serious trouble. Several women experience severe lower back pain after miscarriage.

Causes of lower back pain after miscarriage

Soon after a miscarriage, the uterus starts contracting, so that it can go back to its original size and shape. This process causes the connecting tissues in the back to tighten, which results in some amount of pain. The severity of the pain varies from one woman to the other. The duration for which the pain lasts may also differ, depending upon the woman’s age and overall health.

Treatment for lower back pain after miscarriage

Many women use over the counter medicines to tackle the lower back pain after miscarriage. However, certain side effects may be experienced with the extended use of these medicines. It is better to use simple home remedies to alleviate the pain. Given below are a few simple steps to relieve lower back pain after miscarriage:

  • Get an adequate amount of sleep and rest during the day, to strengthen the body and expedite the recovery process.
  • Perform a few back-strengthening exercises that can get rid of the tension in the lower back area.
  • Soothe the muscles in the back, by soaking in a hot bathtub at least once, or even twice a day.
  • Place a big filled with hot water or a heating pad on the lower back area. Alternating between hot and cold therapy is also quite beneficial.

After a miscarriage, many women suffer from loss of appetite. However, it is important to follow a healthy and balanced diet, so that the worn out tissues can mend faster. In case the pain in the lower back is unbearable, or lasts for more than a couple of weeks after a miscarriage, it is important to check with a doctor and seek medical attention.
