As you make progress through the stages of your pregnancy, there are various changes that your body will also experience. In the initial stages, your hormonal balance is thrown out of sync, causing you to have frequent mood swings. Besides this, your senses are made sharper by the changes in hormonal balance of the body, thereby intensifying your sense of smell and taste. This is the primary reason why expectant mothers experience violent bouts of sickness when they smell food. A hard stomach during pregnancy could be caused by a build up of gas, and is not uncommon amongst numerous expectant mothers.

The occurrence of a rock hard stomach during pregnancy can sometimes be put down to a condition called Braxton hicks, which is actually a false labor pain contraction. When a contraction is felt, the body spontaneously tends to harden the muscles in the abdominal region, causing the feeling of a hard stomach during pregnancy. Braxton Hicks contractions are most often painless, and therefore cannot be ascertained as being the cause of a hard stomach during the pregnancy. There are occasions where dehydration has also caused the stomach to harden. In order to feel more at ease, it is advisable to give the expectant mother plenty of fluids so that the muscles of the abdomen are hydrated enough to soften and help the expectant mother to feel at ease. A tight stomach during early pregnancy will cause you a certain amount of discomfort, but following a routine of exercise for your pregnancy will work wonders in alleviating the condition. A hard stomach during early pregnancy needs to be referred to your doctor who will be able to give you the best advice possible.

As the pregnancy progresses and fetal movements begin, there are certain instances when the fetus moves into an awkward position, causing the stomach to harden. Moving the baby by placing your hands on your belly and rubbing gently will help to overcome the discomfort that you are experiencing. If you find your stomach getting hard during pregnancy, do not pass it off as something that can be ignored. Speak with your doctor and find out what is causing your stomach to get hard. Once this has been determined, your doctor will be able to further advise you on what is to be done next. A hard belly during pregnancy could be indicative of a problem with the pregnancy, and therefore needs to be monitored extremely carefully.
