(April 30, 2010)

Do you feel like there are butterflies fluttering in your stomach or do you get a feeling like popcorn popping inside your belly? Does your stomach bulge on one side? You may feel such belly movements when you are hungry or you are simply lying or sitting quietly. The belly movements occur due to your baby movements and it is common in every pregnancy. It depends on how active your baby is.

Pregnancy is full of surprises. No matter if it is your first or your second pregnancy the, signs and surprises are in abundance. Your baby wriggles, kicks, punches, turns, and rolls inside your belly causing your belly to move in a funny way. These movements may cause unusual feelings. It is natural to feel anxious about the fetal movements throughout your pregnancy. You may feel that your baby is not kicking enough or moving enough. However this may not be the case. Your baby starts kicking somewhere between 16 to 22 weeks.  Your baby starts moving as early as seven to eight weeks, however it is difficult to feel those movements as your baby is too small and hence the movements are not strong enough to be felt.

Those who are thin may be able to feel these movements more acutely than those who have a heavier build. At first, you may notice very few kicks but later they tend to become stronger and more frequent. Every baby has a different kicking pattern. Your baby may be active at a given time of the day. At other times your baby may not be as active as he/she was during that time.

Once you are in the third trimester, the frequency of the kicks will reduce and the belly movements will also stop. You need to notify the doctor if your baby doesn’t move for more than two or three days.

Fetal movements are monitored by way of an ultrasound.  However, a test known as bio-physical profile is done in the fifth month of your pregnancy to determine your baby’s growth. This test also monitors your baby’s movements.

It is important to monitor your baby kicks. You can seek the advice of your doctor to find out ways to count the baby kicks. Also, it is vital that your baby moves at least ten times in four hours.  If this doesn’t happen, it is essential that you contact a doctor immediately in order to ensure that everything is fine.
