IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) During Pregnancy

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can be described as an intestinal disorder, which lasts for a long period of time. When a person suffers from IBS, the intestines do not function properly, which could trigger off many unfavorable symptoms, depending on the severity of the condition.

This condition is twice as common in women, as it is in men and in fact, there are several reported cases of women suffering from IBS during pregnancy.

The exact causes of IBS during pregnancy are still not clear, but it is believed that there are certain factors that can trigger off the condition.

Given below are some of the most common factors believed to cause IBS during pregnancy:

  • Hormonal changes, which are extremely common in almost all pregnant women
  • Stress or even that lead to stress
  • The consumption of certain foods, like chocolate, products that contain caffeine or full cream milk
  • Acute diarrhea or other pregnancy related gastrointestinal problems

Symptoms of IBS During Pregnancy

The signs a symptom of IBS may vary from one person to another, based on the causes and the severity of the condition. Some of the most common symptoms of IBS during pregnancy include:

  • Pain or cramps in the abdominal area
  • Bloating sensation in the abdomen
  • Flatulence or excessive gas
  • Presence of mucus in the stool
  • Constipation or diarrhea, possibly experienced in alternate bouts

Treatment for IBS During Pregnancy

In most instances, treating IBS requires the use of anti-diarrhea medication, antibiotics, antidepressants and anti-cholinergic medication. However, taking such medication is not possible, when treating IBS during pregnancy.

Therefore, pregnant women may need to adopt alternate methods of treating IBS during pregnancy, some of which include:

  • Drinking a lot of water
  • Following a diet that is high in fiber, iron and other nutrients
  • Avoiding foods that can cause a problem, like dairy products, caffeine & alcohol
  • Getting an adequate amount of exercise each day
  • Eating at regular intervals during the day

Dealing with IBS During Pregnancy

Apart from medication and home remedies, women need to look for alternate methods of managing IBS during pregnancy. The first step in coping with IBS during pregnancy is identifying the factors that could have triggered the condition. Hence, women who are pregnant and suffer from IBS or even those who do have this problem and are planning to start a family soon, should speak to a doctor and get as much information as possible.
