When Days and Nights Are Reversed
Babies during the first few years of their life can be quite a handful to deal with and this is especially true after they are born because of their inability to follow the activity and sleep patterns of human beings. Once a child grows up, the daily rhythms of the child start to get set into place. This is called the circadian rhythm, which dictates when we are awake and how our bodies start to slowly shut down into a state of sleep. The exact processes of sleep are completely dictated by the play of hormones in the brain and these are released on the triggers of light and darkness.
The main reason that has been attributed to a newborn having an erratic schedule is because of the way that it spent nine months in the womb. It is hypothesized that when in the womb, the activity of the mother during the day causes a rocking motion in the womb that sends the baby into a sleep mode. However, when the mother settles down at night, the lack of any kind of movement causes the baby to awake. This is the reason why there are times when a baby will kick while the mother is sleeping.
The way to deal with this problem is to simply educate the child on how to sleep at night and abandon its old habits. In a normal human being, the longer that we are awake, the more the buildup of a molecule called adenosine. This is what triggers sleep to overcome us. This means that when your child is awake during the daytime, ensure that you are also awake and stimulating the child adequately and ensure that it is awake.
Generally, after a baby is fed, it will start to get sleepy and this is when you have make sure that the child gets his/her nap. Do not avoid naps as a growing child needs its rest. At some point after the next feeding cycle, the baby will start to get sleepy again during the night. Ensure that night is properly simulated with low-intensity lighting. When the child goes to sleep, you should rest as well. Whenever the child does wake up during the daytime, you should also get up but only to put the baby back to sleep. Ensure that you do not stimulate the child in anyway and put it to sleep in your arms.
