Constipation is known to be a fairly common problem during a woman’s pregnancy. One of the main reasons for this occurrence is due to the increase in progesterone which is a hormone. This causes the food moving through the digestive tract to slow down.

This problem can further intensify in the later stages of the pregnancy. It is caused by the pressure of the uterus which is growing in size and thus bearing down on the woman’s rectum. Iron supplements which are prescribed by the doctor can further worsen the constipation condition.

Prevent Constipation During Pregnancy

Some of the main ways to prevent constipation and to ease it is by eating plenty of high fiber foods. These include whole grain breads, cereals, fresh fruits and plenty of green vegetables like beans, cabbage, broccoli etc. Wheat bran can also be added to the cereal every morning and then followed up with a glass of water. Other ways of treating constipation during pregnancy include drinking plenty of water and other fluids. Drinking fruit juices especially prune juice can prove to be a good treatment for constipation during pregnancy. How to treat constipation during pregnancy is a fairly common question that most doctors have to cover. Constipation during pregnancy treatment includes exercising regularly. Gentle riding, walking, swimming are all beneficial activities. It is also important that a pregnant woman never puts off her urge to go to the bathroom. They can check with their doctor or the medical practitioner on what is the correct medication to follow to avoid getting constipated.

Constipation very often can be an indication of another problem being prevalent. If the woman feels constipated along with an abdominal pain or diarrhea or even if she passes blood in her stools or mucus, then the condition is thought to  be serious and should be addressed immediately. The doctor or midwife may even suggest she be hospitalized.

It is also advisable to avoid straining while having a bowel movement. This can also worsen hemorrhoids, or cause swelling in the veins especially in the rectal area. Normally these conditions disappear once the baby is born. Avoiding stress, anxiety and getting some exercise can help in avoiding constipation. Symptoms of constipation during pregnancy include not passing a stool or getting a bowel movement for about 4 days or more. Also if the faeces are hard and thus passing it becomes difficult.
