Constipation During Pregnancy TreatmentMany women suffer from constipation which is an uncomfortable
symptom of pregnancy. It occurs due to hormonal changes When you are pregnant the progesterone produced relaxed the bowel muscles and the digestive system works slower. This is also so that your body absorbs nutrients from food for the baby. Changes in diet due to morning sickness are another reason. Iron supplements taken during pregnancy can cause constipation too. Constipation can lead to hemorrhoids or piles.
There are several ways to combat constipation. These are:
Switch to a high fiber diet: Include cereals, pulses, whole grain breads and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Melons, plums, apples are full of fiber. Dried fruits like prunes, figs, raisins, apricots are good too. Keep in mind that too much fiber can lead to diarrhea which in turn can cause dehydration so it is essential not to overdo the fiber intake either.
Psyllium husk: This is a natural laxative and safe too.
Increase your intake of liquids: Drink plenty of fluids such as coconut water, butter milk or fruit juice. Water is best and it is essential to drink at least 6-8 glasses a day. Prune juice has been found most beneficial in treating constipation. Fluids help to move the digestive products through your body. An increased fluid intake is also necessary if you are increasing fiber intake. The water helps to soak up the fiber which can otherwise cause more constipation.
Try to include yogurt into your diet. Yogurt contains bacteria called acidophilus which helps stimulate the intestinal bacteria to break down food.
Exercise: Walking, swimming or yoga all help to relieve constipation. Do not, however, do any strenuous exercise and do check with your doctor before starting any exercise routine. Walking is one of the best exercises you can do.
Find out if the pre natal medicine you are on is causing the constipation. Medicines that contain a lot of iron can cause constipation. Check with your doctor about either changing the medication or staying off it till your constipation is under control. A glass of warm water with lime squeezed into it has been known to help. Take this first thing in the morning. Avoid foods that cause constipation. Steer clear from refined foods, white bread, instant noodles, white rice, bananas, and cereals such as cornflakes which can lead to constipation. If the above solutions fail to work, check with your doctor about laxatives that are safe to use.
