Frequent Urination During Pregnancy

Among some of the many side effects of pregnancy, frequent urination is something that women find most bothersome. Frequent urination during pregnancy is not uncommon. In fact, most women experience it. If a woman is experiencing frequent urination, early pregnancy has already passed.

Usually, women begin to experience a strong and frequent urge to urinate after they are six to eight weeks into the pregnancy. This frequent urge to urinate can be attributed to the rapid increase in the volume of blood in the woman’s body. The sudden surge in the blood volume puts extra pressure on the kidneys. The kidneys have extra blood to filter during this period, because of which they have to keep emptying the bladder.

As the pregnancy progresses and the uterus continues to grow, it expands and puts pressure on the bladder, due to which the urge to urinate is rather sudden and frequent. Even if the bladder is not completely full, you may feel this urge. There may even be times when you may feel the need to urinate but may not be able to do so.

Conditions for Frequent Urination During Pregnancy

For different women, the urge to urinate occurs differently. While most women begin to experience this sudden and frequent urge in their second trimester, there are others who feel it at the onset of pregnancy. There are some women who experience frequent urination in pregnancy right until they go into labor.

There is a need to drink a lot of fluids to keep the body hydrated during pregnancy. However, some women feel that if they consume as little fluids as possible, they will be able to avert frequent urination.

Frequent urination and pregnancy really does not have much to do with the amount of water and fluids that you consume. In addition to this, it is important to drink an adequate amount of water in order to keep yourself hydrated.

How to Control Frequent Urination During Pregnancy

To control the frequency of urination, instead of cutting down on water and other fluids cut down your intake of diuretics like coffee, soda and tea. If waking up in the night to go to the bathroom bothers you, consume fluids during the first half of the day, decreasing your intake as the night approaches. This way, you will not have to wake up in the middle of the night to pee. When you are in the bathroom, you can tilt forward to exert pressure on the bladder and allow it to completely drain. This will increase the interval between consecutive trips to the bathroom. During the later stages of pregnancy, when your uterus is completely grown, this technique can prove to be extremely beneficial.
