  • Water retention in the body also causes swollen feet during pregnancy.
  • The swelling becomes more pronounced as the day progresses, especially if you spend a lot of time on your feet, because gravity causes accumulation of fluid at the lowest point.
  • Heat and fatigue also cause the feet to swell up more.

Remedy for Swollen Feet During Pregnancy

  • Try not to put on too much weight. Eat a well-balanced diet, and cut down on foods with high fat content, since they lead to weight gain. Include foods like fish, dairy products, pulses, grains, vegetables and fruits, which are rich in vitamins and minerals.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. This will ensure proper functioning of the kidneys and help excess toxins to be flushed out from the body. Include foods like apples, citrus fruits, parsley, watercress, celery, garlic and onions which help you to pass out more urine and also aid better circulation. Avoid too much of tea and coffee during this period.

  • Avoid foods which are highly processed, pre-packaged or have too much salt, since they lead to fluid retention.
  • Engage in light exercising during pregnancy since that helps blood circulation, and hence reduces swelling of feet. Walking is a good exercise. You can also do yoga and pranayama, which tone up the body and calm the mind.
  • Try to get some rest by propping your feet up on pillows or cushions or on a stool, in such a way that your feet are higher than your hips. If your work involves a lot of standing, sit down whenever possible, or walk for about a bit to increase your blood circulation.
  • Massaging your feet and hands gently can also relax and provide relief from swollen feet during pregnancy.
  • If your feet are excessively swollen and painful, you can try wrapping a cabbage leaf around the ankles or calves. This is supposed to draw out the excess fluid.
  • You can also soak your feet in a bowl of water in which you have added a few drops of aromatherapy oils like chamomile, lavender or cypress.
