Types of Insect Bites

Mainly there are three types of insect bites that may affect your toddler. They are:

  • Flea bites are more common and occur in greater numbers than spider bites. These bites mostly occur on the legs while crawling on the floor. They often are not painful at the time of the bite but gradually become itchy. Some toddlers are very sensitive to flea bites. Common places where there are more chances of flea bites are houses with pets, sea beaches, and parks.
  • Mosquito bites usually occur on exposed areas of the body such as the hands, ankles, and neck. Some mosquitoes carrying viruses can cause diseases like malaria and dengue fever.

Precautions from Insect Bites

You can protect your toddler from insect bites by taking the following precautions:

  • Avoid letting your toddler play near insect hives.
  • Do not spray any floral perfume on your toddler.
  • Do not make your toddler wear floral patterned clothes.
  • Use insect repellants in your house.

  • Avoid eating outdoors, especially around areas where garbage cans are placed. These often attract bees and other insects.

Treatment for Insect Bites

In case your toddler gets bit by an insect, take the following measures before a bite results in infection:

  • Wash the affected area with warm soapy water.
  • Apply some hydrogen peroxide diluted with equal quantity of water.
  • Wash it off with tap water after two minutes
  • Apply an antibiotic ointment on the affected area.

For treating and protecting your toddler from insect bite infections do the following:

  • Cut the fingernails of your child so that he may not scratch on bitten area. This will decrease the risk of infection being introduced into the bites.
  • Press a piece of cloth soaked in cold water to reduce the burning or itching sensation.
  • Flea bites and mosquito bites usually do not require any special measures to prevent infection of the surrounding area of affected skin. Apply some cold cream on such bites so as to keep the skin soft.

In case the insect bitten area gets swollen, consult your doctor
