Miscarriage Infection Symptoms and Ways to Avoid Them.
Miscarriage infections symptoms include chills, fever of 100.4 degrees, a foul smelling vaginal discharge and bleeding or cramping that lasts longer than 2 weeks. Approximately 3 % of women develop an infection post miscarriage. This is sometimes due to tissue that is retained in the uterus. If you have any of the above symptoms, do contact your doctor immediately. Infections in the uterus can be dangerous if not treated.

...pregnancy before 20 weeks. After 20 weeks, it is called a pre term delivery or still birth. Most women miscarry in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy but there are cases of later miscarriages as well. Missed miscarriages also occur. This happens when the fetus dies but the body does not expel the fetus until much later. The most common signs of a miscarriage are cramping and bleeding.
You will need to go to a hospital if you have had an incomplete miscarriage or a missed abortion (missed miscarriage). Do remember that incomplete miscarriages can result in infection and infertility if not treated in time. The doctor will examine you to confirm the miscarriage and also check to see if any tissue is left. You then have 3 options:-
- To wait and see
- Take tablets to induce a natural delivery thereby ensuring that the uterus will be completely dry
- Undergo a Dilation and Curettage(D & C)
A D & C is important as it minimizes the risk of infection. If the remaining tissue is not removed it gets infected over time and can cause serious health problems. The fever, cramping, bleeding and foul smelling vaginal discharge are all symptoms of infection after a miscarriage. These infections are serious and prompt medical attention is required. They can cause pain, blood infections, and also affect a woman's ability to have more children. Women who have carried the fetus of a missed abortion for a long time will have to be hospitalized and treated for life threatening infections.
Avoid Miscarriage Infections
You can reduce the risk of infection by avoiding douching, swimming pools and tampons for the length of time recommended by your doctor. It is ok to resume physical activity but avoid sexual intercourse till the bleeding has stopped. Shower instead of bathing. It is fine to return to work a day after the surgery if you wish to.
Do not blame yourself for losing the baby. Allow yourself to heal in your own time and own way.
