Most first trimester miscarriage causes are genetic deformities in the developing baby. These take place due to chromosomal imbalance or abnormalities in the pregnancy like a molar pregnancy, blighted ovum or ectopic pregnancy. In such cases, nature takes its course and terminates the pregnancy on its own. In the case of genetic irregularities, at times, the pregnancy may be terminated naturally at a later stage and in rare cases; the pregnancy may carry on to term. However, these children are unlikely to ever be able to lead normal lives. In most cases, these complications resulting in pregnancy loss are freak mistakes of nature that may not necessarily be repeated. At times, scars on the uterine wall prevent proper implantation of the fertilized egg causing it to be flushed out of the uterus. Another common cause for pregnancy miscarriage is uterine defects that prevent proper development of the baby. The uterus may not be able to expand beyond a certain point thus expelling the baby when it becomes too big to hold. In the case of fibroids and tumors, blood is drawn away from the baby, thus making development impossible. An unhealthy lifestyle that includes the consumption of unhealthy foods, irregular meals, high caffeine intake and insufficient exercise and rest also increases the possibility of a miscarriage. The intake or alcohol or the use of tobacco and drugs can also result in early pregnancy loss. Conditions like high blood pressure, preeclampsia, high blood glucose and obesity also increase the chances of miscarriage in first trimester. In addition, physical and emotional trauma, overexertion and stress could also result in pregnancy loss.

Vaginal bleeding is the main symptom of pregnancy loss. Other signs of miscarriage include back pain and abdominal cramping. In most cases, heavy bleeding along with severe cramping and the passage of tissue and blood clots indicate a miscarriage in progress. Most women cease to experience pregnancy symptoms like nausea, vomiting and breast tenderness almost immediately. Intuition is another major indicator of pregnancy loss.
