Joint pains after pregnancy are quite common and have various causes. During pregnancy, the hormone oxytocin relaxes the ligaments attached to the pelvis, which can result in a misalignment of the spine and the pelvis. This can cause back and hip joint pain after pregnancy. Knee and finger joint pain after pregnancy has also been observed in many women as has pain in the neck and even the wrists.

These are mainly caused by the physical labor involved in caring for a newborn child. Another cause of pain in the hips and tailbone area is the trauma caused during delivery which can result in bruising or fracture of the tailbone.
Severe joint pain after pregnancy and childbirth is usually attributed to Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). The fatigue caused is generally due to sleep deprivation.
Rheumatoid arthritis can appear for the first time or reappear after pregnancy. It can be caused by a reduction in steroid levels post delivery or even due to high levels of prolactin.
Pregnancy can cause thyroid disorders and these have often been associated with joint pains.Most joint pains will disappear after a few months. Regular exercise is important in helping the abdominal and other muscles regain their strength. Most physicians advise a gentle exercise routine starting six weeks after delivery. Make sure you consult your physician before starting an exercise routine. Yoga under proper guidance has been found to be very helpful in dealing with joint pains after pregnancy. Exercises targeting the affected areas and swimming are also highly beneficial.A healthy diet with lots of fluids is also essential for a quick recovery. Consult your physician about taking fish oils and other supplements.
Other therapies that can help are massages and hot and cold compresses. If you are nursing, consult your physician before applying any ointments on the affected parts. By and large, most joint pains after pregnancy will subside after a few months as the body gradually returns to its normal state. Proper care and exercise will hasten the process. Consult your physician regularly, follow his advise and you should have nothing to worry about.
