15 Weeks Pregnancy

Submitted by Pregnancy and Baby Care team on February 1, 2012

Around the 15th week of pregnancy the baby will have grown to measure around 4 inches in length. This is the measurement from the baby’s crown till the rump. The baby will now weigh approximately 2 and half ounces which is just about the size of an apple. The baby will now be freely moving in all the amniotic fluid that is surrounding its body. The baby will be swallowing the amniotic fluid through its nose and also it upper respiratory tract. This is beneficial in getting the air sacs of the baby’s lungs to start to develop. By now the baby’s legs will begin to grow even longer than its arms.

The baby will be able to move its legs and arms. At this point the fetus is even able to sense the light changes even if its eyes are fused shut. If a torch light is flashed directly at the woman’s tummy the baby will probably move away to get away from the light. The taste buds are just about beginning to develop, though there is not much for the baby to taste. An ultrasound if conducted around the 15th week of pregnancy will help in determining if the baby is a boy or a girl. This is not however always guaranteed as it all depends on how clear the picture is and also on the way the baby is positioned.

Some of the pregnancy symptoms like nausea, breast tenderness, and extreme fatigue will now begin to reduce considerably. However the pregnant mother may suffer from a stuffed nose or a few other symptoms that are related to pregnancy. This stuffed nose may be linked to increase in the blood flow to the mucous membranes and also the effects of hormonal changes. This is fairly common among pregnant women and is referred to as “rhinitis of pregnancy”. Some pregnant women may suffer from occasional nose bleeds. This is likely due to an increase in the blood volume and also expansion of the blood vessels in one’s nose.

The amniocentesis is most often done around this time. It is mainly done to identify the possibilities of any chromosomal the baby may even start moving around this time, though  usually it is around 16 weeks. The initial movements feel more like butterflies in one’s stomach and may not be very easy to identify. The mother will now feel fitter and may even be able to join some prenatal exercise classes. She can also join in some swimming classes for pregnant mothers or join Pilates or aerobics.
