If you’re reading this then you’re probably extremely frustrated, but the fact is that most mothers reach the due date, and actually end up going past it by a week or two. Pregnancy week 41 can be quite a trying time for you as you begin to wait anxiously and wonder if everything’s alright.

...placenta does begin to show signs of age. In other words it’s nearing the end of its lifespan and it’s better to get the baby out sooner rather than later. The supply of amniotic fluid that has been available to your baby may also begin to diminish. For this reason your healthcare provider would most likely recommend a non-stress test or biophysical profile. This will help determine whether or not it is advisable for you to wait it out, or if labor should be induced. Whatever the case, you needn’t worry as your health care provider will advise you appropriately and do the needful.

In cases where you are well past the due date and your health care provider feels it advisable to induce labor you will be informed of the same. You would receive information on the various option of medical labor induction, and you can also find out about natural methods of labor induction, but always consult your health care provider for final advice. Some natural methods can be quite effective, particularly if the cervix is dilated and somewhat effaced. In cases where medical tests and reports show that your baby is doing quite well it may be unnecessary to induce labor, and if your medical provider does recommend it you could ask for some more time.

Although the information may not be uplifting it certainly eliminates some cause for worry. There is however some actual good news. Babies born late generally weigh more, appear to be a lot more alert, and usually tend to have more hair as compared to babies born earlier. At this stage your baby should weigh in at around 7½ to 8 pounds and would measure around 21 inches in length. The important thing for you to do now is to just take it easy and get your family and friends to pamper you as much as possible. In a few days your baby will probably be the one stealing all the attention.
