Submitted by Pregnancy and Baby Care team on January 31, 2012
Being pregnant brings on a lot of changes in the mother’s body besides the fetus developing in her womb. In week 13 of pregnancy some of the main developments in the fetus are that the baby would now be approximately 6.7 cm in length from the baby’s crown up till the baby’s rump. The weight of the baby should be around 23 to 25 grams which is just about half of a banana. By around this time the baby if it is a girl, will have about 2 million odd eggs developed in her ovaries. But by the time the baby is actually born, there will be around 1 million of these eggs and as the girl child grows the number of her ovaries will keep dropping.

By the thirteenth week some of the pregnancy side effects that would have been affecting a woman till now will begin to diminish. These include intense fatigue, frequent urination, nausea and even breast tenderness. However the ever growing uterus will now make the woman’s stomach look further rounded. By now the uterus may have become large enough to indicate to the world the woman’s pregnancy. One can see the fully formed little baby now in the mother’s uterus, only a much smaller size. This week on is considered to officially be the second trimester of a woman’s pregnancy. The good news in this month is that the risks or chances of miscarriage diminish drastically now. Also for a lot of women the reduction in morning sickness is also great. With the reduction in nausea bouts a woman’s libido improves vastly. Also the energy levels now begin to rise.
In fact for many women the absence of morning sickness makes them wonder if they are pregnant at all. In this month the woman’s breasts may have already started producing the colostrums in spite of the actual birth being many months away. This colostrum is the milk that is first produced and helps in nourishing one’s baby. The size of the breast does not make any difference to the amount of milk each women produces. Even with a really small breast the women will still be able to adequately nurse her baby. Some women may start to experience chronic heart burn around this time. Some of the natural cures for this condition include eating papaya and drinking cold milk. For a lot of women around these months, their appetites begin to take an upward swing.
