At 5 months or in the 21st week of your pregnancy your baby’s rapid growth phase begins to decelerate. The baby’s heart does however grow stronger and the legs are growing closer towards relative proportions. Your baby is basically a miniature and thinner version of what he or she will appear like at full term. This is a crucial stage in your pregnancy as within the next few weeks the lungs will also mature. This is vital for the survival of your baby in the postnatal world outside of the uterus. The skin, organs, and the central nervous system of your baby also continue to grow and mature during this period. At this time your baby’s digestive system is also functional although not yet fully mature. In fact, the intestines begin to contract and relax, and your baby is now actually capable of swallowing and can absorb fluids via the amniotic fluid, a process that helps the digestive system mature. At some point of time you may even notice your baby hiccupping, which is surprisingly very common. This generally occurs during the second trimester. You’d probably sense these hiccups as small and repetitive, rhythmic motions that occur from time to time in your belly.

The changes and growth of your baby are also reflected in your bodily changes. During the 21st week your abdomen is however still at a size that is relatively easy to manage and it does allow for some extent of freedom and movement. This period is actually considered by most women to be the most comfortable period of the pregnancy, as the initial pregnancy symptoms also decline to some extent.

All the same, you will probably notice some aches and pains in your legs. Support stockings that are useful for varicose veins can also help alleviate these symptoms as they can relieve some of the heaviness and aches in the legs. Donning that maternity hose as soon as you get out of bed could also help prevent or minimize some of that swelling. Try and sit back and relax, propping your feet up when you’re seated. While you’re at it you could even get your partner to give you a nice relaxing foot massage! Regular and mild exercising can also help alleviate the aches and pains, but make sure you consult your gynecologist before diving into any routine.
