Your toddler is at a greater risk of suffering from this infection if she is a girl. Once you observe these symptoms of urinary tract infection in your toddler, make sure that you consult a doctor and follow the usually prescribed course of antibiotics in order to get your child treated. The antibiotic doses generally come in the form of oral solutions, though in a few serious cases the medicines may need to be administered intravenously if the child is seriously unwell and is unable to eat or drink anything.

Preventing Toddler Urinary Tract Infection

There are a few basic rules that you should follow in order to prevent urinary tract infections. You must ensure that your toddler drinks plenty of water and natural fruit juices every day. This helps flush out toxins and bacteria from the urinary tract and reduces the chances of local infections. An additional benefit of drinking lots of fluids is that it prevents constipation and thereby minimizes the chances of UTI. It is also useful to feed the child plenty of fresh fruits, raw vegetables and whole grains, as these are natural sources of fibers that help keep the system clean and prevent constipation.

It is also popularly believed that making the toddler drink a small cup of cranberry juice every day helps prevent bacterial infections in the urinary tract. If your toddler is a girl, you should pay special attention to her personal hygiene. Make sure that you wipe her genital area clean in a downward motion using soft, toilet paper and a very mild antibacterial soap solution. Change her diapers or underwear as frequently as required in order to prevent dampness, which is one of the major factors that helps bacteria grow into and infect the urinary tract. If toddler urinary tract infection symptoms do not subside within a day or two, consult a doctor.
