Pink eye is a common condition worldwide and the medical term for this condition is conjunctivitis. It is caused by a virus, and therefore, it is a highly contagious disease. Bacterial infection is also one of the other causes of pink eye in toddlers. These are the common symptoms of pink eye in toddlers. The severity of the symptoms of pink eye in babies may differ from the one to another. Here, it may be noted that symptoms of pink eye in toddlers as well as adults are more or less similar. Pink eye is not a serious condition and generally disappears within a week or so but it may cause a lot of discomfort to your child. Itching is one of the most common symptoms of pink eye and so your child will probably try to rub his/her eyes. You need to make sure that your child does not get a chance to scratch his/her eyes as this could increase the severity of the infection. A warm compress can be used to provide relief from intense itching. You can soak a piece of clean cotton cloth in warm water and gently press this on your toddler’s eyelids. It will help in soothing his/her eyes and providing relief from the pain and irritation.
As soon as you notice the first symptoms of red eye in your child’s eyes, you should consult your pediatrician for an immediate diagnosis. Antibiotic medications are not prescribed for viral infections but in this case, they may be recommended –not to treat the eye infection but to prevent secondary infections. When you find out that another toddler has come down with pink eye, you should discourage your child from interacting with them as the disease is highly contagious. If your toddler is affected, you need to keep them at home to make sure that other kids do not get affected.
