Yeast infection and postpartum bleeding?

(April 14, 2010)

Postpartum Bleeding refers to the period immediately following pregnancy. During this period, it is absolutely normal for a woman to continue to bleed for a few days in order to ensure that the body is free of all placental tissue, excess mucus and other products of conception. This bleeding is known as lochia. It is characterized by the flow of bright red blood, with clots, for 8 to 10 days following delivery, after which the blood takes on a pinkish hue followed by a yellowish-white discharge towards the end. During this time, the vaginal area provides a suitable breeding ground for the growth of yeast. Yeast is a fungus that is present on human skin and is found mainly in moist areas like the mucus membranes of the mouth and vagina.

The main symptoms of a yeast infection are varying levels of burning, irritation, itchiness and soreness in the vaginal area. Immense pain during urination or intercourse may also prevail. The external vaginal area may become red in color. In the case of yeast infections, the discharge from the vagina is usually white or whitish-gray and may resemble curd or cottage cheese. It is generally odorless or in some cases, may smell like baker’s yeast.

Hormonal changes that take place postpartum are usually the cause of yeast infections after pregnancy. The use of antibiotics for a prolonged period of time could also lead to vaginal yeast infection. Women with high blood sugar levels are more prone to yeast infections as this fungus feasts on sugar. Postpartum, many women tend to overlook personal hygiene in an effort to ensure that all the baby’s needs are satisfied. However, personal hygiene plays a major role in the prevention of yeast infections. At times, allergic reactions to toilet paper, vaginal douches, feminine sprays and certain detergents and soaps could also lead to yeast infections.

In order to keep yeast infections at bay, it is very important to maintain personal hygiene at all times. Washing the vaginal area with a mixture of vinegar and water will help in killing the fungi. The area should be wiped properly to ensure that it is dry. The use of well-fitting cotton panties is recommended as tight synthetic panties and pantyhose increase the chances of a yeast infection. Consumption of yogurt, grains and vegetables are recommended for the treatment of yeast infections. Sugar, in any form, and alcohol should be avoided as they encourage the growth of yeast. Consulting a doctor is recommended before using any form of medication.
