Exercise During Pregnancy Has Baby Benefits, Too

Most women feel that their baby will benefit if they avoid physical exercise and turn to maximum rest. Studies also show that a baby developing in the womb of a mother, who exercises regularly, has better cardiovascular control during breathing movements. The fetal heart rate in these cases is also considerably lower during breathing and non-breathing phases. The baby’s heart rate variability is also higher during breathing movements. The positive connection between a baby’s breathing movements and the maturing autonomic nervous system shows that exercise has benefits for the baby too.

Exercise also has numerous benefits for the mother to be. Regular exercise helps an expectant mother to gain control over her changing physical appearance. It also helps in boosting energy levels and blood circulation. Keeping fit also reduces joint and back pains by lubricating the joints and strengthening the muscles. Breathing exercises and meditation are known to bring down stress levels thus reducing the chances of related disorders thus reducing the risks of hypertension and related disorders which in turn benefit the baby. Exercising regularly also reduces the risk of complications related to the delivery like the increased chances of C-sections and postpartum bleeding.

The physical exercises undertaken should not be strenuous in nature. Walking and swimming are known to aid pregnancy without causing strain on the expectant mother and the growing baby. However, it is essential to keep in mind that some women do develop complications during the course of pregnancy. These complications may require the expectant mother to undertake a minimal amount of physical activity. In such cases, exercising may prove detrimental to the development of the developing baby.
