Illness is a part and parcel of life and everyone experiences some sort of discomfort at some point in their life. Like adults, toddlers get sick too and headaches and fevers are two of the most common conditions observed. Toddlers cannot express their feelings properly due to their limited vocabulary. This is when their actions speak louder than words. They normally tend to become unusually cranky, irritable and lethargic. A child holding his or her head, squinting or a furrowed brow may be indicators of a headache. An inability to bear loud noises and bright lights could also indicate a headache.

Toddler Headache Fever Conditions

A fever is the body’s natural mechanism to fight off bacterial or viral infections like the common cold and influenza. As a result of an infection, a toddler may not get sufficient sleep and insufficient rest is one of the main reasons for headaches. Irregular meal routines and unhealthy eating habits could also be responsible for illness and headaches. Dehydration is another common cause of headaches and could be triggered by diarrhea or vomiting. Most headaches have no serious implications. However, in some cases, they may be significant signs of an underlying problem. If a toddler’s fever and headache persists, and is accompanied by vomiting, listlessness, fatigue, difficulty breathing, rashes, seizures or a stiff neck it may be indicative of something more serious like septicemia and meningitis which need medical attention immediately. Hence, consulting a pediatrician to rule out other complications is highly recommended. Medication should not be self administered but should be given only after consulting a pediatrician. The doctor may recommend clinical tests to ascertain the cause of the fever and headaches and rule out any doubts.

Toddler Headache Fever Remedy

In order to keep your toddler healthy, following a strict routine daily is recommended. A diet with a proper balance of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins, fats and fiber is recommended. Foods rich in vitamin C help in building up a toddler’s immune system and keeping infections at bay. Encouraging your toddler to drink plenty of water throughout the day is also recommended as water helps in flushing out impurities from the body while keeping the body hydrated at all times. Regular naptimes also play a vital role in a toddler’s well being as it is during this time that the body rejuvenates itself thus gaining the strength to fight off infectious germs. Hygiene also plays its role in keeping microbes away.
