(April 15, 2010)

It is very common for a toddler to get rash as a toddler’s skin is extremely delicate and the sweat glands that lubricate skin are still developing. Toddlers heat rash is mainly caused by elevated temperature and humid climate. When the sweat glands get blocked by dead skin, grime or bacteria, it results in the formation of many small blisters in a localized area. Patches of blisters are commonly seen on the exposed areas of skin, mainly on the face and the neck. They also develop in crevices of the skin and areas that are prone to friction caused by clothes rubbing against it. These small red papules cause intense itching and discomfort and often last for a few days. The condition is often referred to as prickly heat because it causes a pricking sensation similar to that caused by pins and needles. In extreme cases, these small blisters interrupt the natural heat-regulating system of the body. This leads to an increase in body temperature causing fever or heat exhaustion. In order to avoid the formation of heat rash, ensuring that the environment around your toddler is cool is advisable. The use of air conditioning is helpful in keeping body temperature within the suitable limit. Regular cold water showers and the occasional use of cold packs will also help in regulating body temperature during the hot summer months. The use of a mild antibacterial body wash instead of harsh soaps is recommended as this is known to reduce the severity and duration of the rash. Avoid overdressing your baby. Light cotton clothing is beneficial for the prevention of heat rash. Ensure that your toddler drinks plenty of water and juices so as to prevent dehydration. Encourage your toddler to play indoors, especially during the day. Taking him to the park later in the day, when the sun isn’t that hot would be a good option. It is also advisable to ensure that your toddler does not engage in activities that would cause him to sweat profusely.

Allergic reactions could also cause rashes. These could be due to various allergens like dust mites, pollen and certain foods and beverages. Some baby products like highly scented soaps and powders also have the ability to cause rashes. It should also be noted that small blisters accompanied by fever could be indicative of viral diseases like measles, chicken pox and small pox. These are highly contagious conditions that should not be ignored. Hence, consulting a pediatrician in the case of any rash is recommended so that the necessary treatment can be resorted to at the earliest.
