Hair loss during pregnancy is rarely experienced. In fact, hormonal changes during pregnancy make your hair grow healthier. An increase in the estrogen hormone results in healthy and thick hair growth.

The increase in estrogen causes an increase in the metabolism of the entire body and affects the growth rate of your hair in a positive manner. Normally, you experience some amount of hair loss at any point of time, but during pregnancy, it is reduced considerably.

Loss of hair during pregnancy could be because of the following reasons:

  • Deficiency of vitamins and certain minerals in the diet.
  • Hair loss during pregnancy might be due to a thyroid problem.
  • Emotional distress may cause hair loss during early pregnancy.

Prevent Hair Loss During Pregnancy

If you do happen to suffer hair loss during pregnancy, take the following steps to prevent the excessive loss of hair:

  • The first and the foremost thing is to avoid unnecessary stress.
  • Do not use a hair drier unless you really need to and make sure that you only use it at a lower temperature.
  • Don’t comb or brush your hair too often and with force. It is also better to avoid excessive hair styling.
  • Eat a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Consume salads, green vegetables, and fruits as much as you can in order to get these nutrients. A healthy diet results in healthy hair.
  • Learn some gentle scalp exercises and massage your scalp so as to improve blood circulation.
  • Avoid using hair colors containing harmful chemicals. These chemicals can lead to excessive hair fall.

  • Use mild shampoos and preferably herbal shampoos.

Home Remedies for Hair Loss During Pregnancy

  • Take half a cup of fresh coconut milk. Apply it gently on your scalp with your finger tips. Keep it on for 20 to 30 minutes and then wash it off using any good herbal shampoo. Do ensure that the coconut milk is fresh and not the tinned variety that is available in stores.
  • Take six tablespoons of castor oil and one fourth teaspoon of lavender essential oil. Mix the oils thoroughly and apply it on your scalp. Wash it off after about one hour. Make sure that you talk to your doctor before you use essential oils as some of them are not recommended for pregnant women.
  • Take one tablespoonful of lemon juice and mix it in one thoroughly beaten egg. Apply this mixture gently on your scalp and after about half an hour wash it off. This home remedy will not only prevent hair loss during pregnancy, but you will have thicker, healthier and silkier hair.

It is also a good idea to tell your doctor about this hair loss as it may be a symptom of some other ailment and it is best that all possible symptoms are investigated as early as possible.
