Is it normal to have nightmares during pregnancy?

There are many health experts who state that it is absolutely normal for women to see a lot of vivid nightmares during pregnancy. Moreover, it is believe that these nightmares during pregnancy are more common and probably a lot more intense in case of those women who are about to face the prospect of motherhood for the first time in their lives.

What causes nightmares during pregnancy?

There are several factors that could contribute to a woman having nightmares during pregnancy. Women who are pregnant for the first time are bound to be nervous, anxious and stressed most of the time, which is one of the main factors that could lead to disturbed sleep patterns and nightmares. Another factor is that many pregnant women get less sleep as compared to before, which adds to the stress levels, causing the dreams to be on the weird side. Of course, like all other changes that take place during the first half of pregnancy, nightmares during early pregnancy can also be a result of hormonal changes.

Unfortunately, a woman’s dreams are not just restricted to nightmares during first trimester. In some women, these nightmares should reduce or should get better during the second trimester, as the hormones stabilize a bit. However, in the third trimester it is very likely for the hormonal fluctuations to take place once again. Moreover, as the delivery due date approaches, it is only natural for a woman’s fears, concerns and anxiety to intensify. Hence, the nightmares during third trimester of pregnancy could be a lot worse, as compared to the next.

There are some women who wonder if nightmares during pregnancy are one of the pregnancy signs and symptoms, since there are so many women who experience them. However, nightmares are not one of the pregnancy symptoms as many women do not have a single nightmare during the course of their pregnancy. However, in case the nightmares during pregnancy turn into a problem, by disrupting a woman’s day to day life and sleeping patterns, then it may be best to consult a doctor for techniques to reduce or overcome them.
