Signs and Causes of Skin Discoloration During Pregnancy

With each passing trimester you may notice that your areola and the skin between your thighs, underarms, and linea nigra (a dark, vertical line on the abdomen) are turning dark. Also, your otherwise light colored freckles and moles are also appearing darker than usual.

While you are pregnant, the increasing levels of melanin, the substance that is responsible for your skin color and hair growth, promotes this condition. The skin changes are more evident if you have a dark complexion than in those who are fair.

Tips to Avoid Skin Discoloration During Pregnancy

This “mask of pregnancy” is just a temporary phase and will soon disappear after you deliver and once your hormones settle down. However, while you are undergoing this condition, here are some things that you can follow:

  • Use gentle cleansers and creams and stay away from any product that is likely to irritate your skin.
  • Your skin tends to be sensitive during pregnancy. So it is advisable to avoid skin-bleaching products.
  • Eat a balanced and nutritious diet.
  • Do not get worked-up unnecessarily. Till the signs disappear, just remember to relax and enjoy the journey of motherhood.
