The journey to parenthood is one of the most amazing experiences in life that comes with a variety of responsibilities and choices. It is also a phase that needs special care and thought, particularly in relation to diet and lifestyle. Planning a change in dietary patterns and lifestyle indicates that you have already started making the right choices for your little baby. These changes, however small and insignificant they may seem, play a crucial role in the health and development of your unborn baby.

A safe pregnancy is directly linked with the health of the mother-to-be. Hence, a well balanced diet is recommended to ensure that the mother receives all the nutrients essential for staying healthy. This nutrition is in turn passed on to the developing fetus. Folic acid is an essential addition to the daily nutritional intake as it plays a vital role in reducing the risks of congenital defects related to the brain, nervous system, heart and a host of other birth defects in the developing fetus. It also decreases the risks of premature delivery and miscarriage. Iron and calcium, along with other nutrients, play an important part in the proper formation of bones, blood and organs of the developing baby. While pregnant, a woman is often prone to indigestion, heartburn and constipation. Thus, increasing the intake of vegetables and fruits, especially green leafy vegetables is recommended as they are easy to digest and provide the body with plenty of fiber in addition to most of the nutrients required for maintaining a healthy body. These foods are also low in fats. Fatty, oily and spicy foods should be avoided. Vitamin C builds up the immune system of the mother-to-be making her less susceptible to infections and diseases that may prove detrimental to the unborn baby. A lifestyle with a proper blend of good food, rest and exercise is recommended for a smooth pregnancy. Irregular eating habits and skipping meals may adversely affect the development of the baby and should be avoided completely. The consumption of alcohol and the use of tobacco and other recreational drugs have the ability to affect the growth of the fetus and should be refrained from. Sufficient exercise plays an important role in keeping the body fit, flexible and toned. Adequate rest and sleep ensures that the body has sufficient time to rejuvenate after the strain of the day. It is during this time that the body’s self-healing mechanism comes into play.
