Milk Intake During Weaning

Weaning is a significant process in which mother’s milk is substituted with external food. Mother’s milk, though rich in nutrients and antibodies (which strengthen the immune system of the baby), lacks certain nutrients. As such, weaning introduces eternal food to the diet of a baby, thereby supplementing nutrients in the baby’s diet.

Weaning is recommended to be initiated when the baby is four to six months old. When you begin weaning your baby, you are recommended to introduce extracts of pulses, juices, and baby food to diet of your baby. However, babies may show resistance to milk after being weaned. There is a possibility that your baby will prefer to eat than to consume milk.

This is a matter of concern. As mentioned earlier, mother’s milk is a good source of antibodies for the baby. It boosts the immune system, and thereby reduces proneness to disease and infection. Hence, you must take measures to provide at least twenty ounces of milk in the daily diet of your baby till the infant is one year old.

The measures that should be taken to ensure that your baby takes the requisite quantity of milk in the diet are listed below:

  • If your baby is resistant to the intake of milk during weaning, you are advised to mix milk along with your preparations of solid food like baby food.
  • You can use custard and yogurt to supplement milk in your baby’s diet.
  • You can also use grated cheese while preparing baby food.
  • You are recommended to give cheese cubes to your baby once she is a year old.

It is essential that your baby consumes at least twenty ounces of milk on a daily basis. The baby should be fed on mother’s milk till she is six months old. Later, you can give her full fat cow’s milk which is extremely high in nutrients and is easily digestible.

However, you are recommended not to force your baby to consume milk in the desired quantity as this could lead to the baby’s reduced interest in food. Moreover, as mentioned above, it is not necessary to consume milk directly for the required nutrition. Consumption of milk products also serves the purpose.

You must consult your doctor if your baby refuses to consume milk and milk products. Milk is an important source of nutrients for the baby. If the baby isn’t consuming milk in the desired amount while weaning, the doctor should be informed.
