Symptoms of Toddler Food Allergies

There can be a wide range of symptoms of food allergy in toddlers. These are some of the common symptoms seen in a toddler with food allergies:

  • Unusual crying and sleep disorders
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Breathing problems
  • Runny nose and excessive sneezing
  • Rashes and other skin disorders, eczema and hives
  • Itchiness in the mouth and throat.

In certain extreme cases, toddlers may fall into a life-threatening condition termed as anaphylactic shock. Immediate medical attention is required in such serious cases.

Preventing Food Allergies in Toddlers

It is rightly said that prevention is better than cure. Here are a few remedies to avert the incidence of food allergies in toddlers:

  • Before introducing solid food to your toddler, wait for him to be six months old.
  • Introduce only one food item at a time.

  • Wait for at least three to four days before introducing new food to your baby.

As of now, there is no permanent cure for allergies. Doctors withdraw various foods from the diet of toddlers one by one, to detect the food item which was causing the allergy. After the food is withdrawn, the symptoms usually clear within four to five days. In some cases it may take as long as one to two weeks. Most pediatricians strictly recommend the dietary elimination of these foods in any form.

It is essential that parents are cautious enough to read the labels of foods, particularly formula foods, so as to prevent toddler food allergies. Parents must attempt to give home-made food to toddlers so that the ingredients of the foods are devoid of allergic contents. toddler food allergies.
