During winter you can afford to opt for slouchy chic or cozy separates that show off your sense of style. Winter is a time for bold textures and warm fabrics. Look for tweed, marl, wool, leather, fur or suede to amp up your winter maternity fashion.

If you are worried about blowing your savings on a winter wardrobe that may never be used again, follow these simple tips to stay in vogue no matter what the weather demands:

  • Let your summer clothes multi-task this winter. Now is the time for layering your dresses with leggings and sweater sets. Paired with a pair of glossy flat boots, the look could take you from office casual to weekend glam. Double up your long sleeved t-shirts with your skimpier vests and tank tops. By doing so, you can save a pretty packet as well.
  • Invest in a few key tailored separates. This is especially important if you are working through your pregnancy. Well cut black or brown trousers in wool, crisp shirts and blouses, sweater twin-sets and wrap dresses can see you through most events and office outings without compromising on style or comfort.
  • Stretch pants are back in fashion and thank god for them! Buy stretch pants or leggings in a host of bold colors and mix and match your tops and sweaters for completely new looks every time. Paired with a slouchy sweater and a pair of ballerina flats, the look spells cozy and comfortable.
  • Maternity jeans are invaluable during your pregnancy. Slip on some leggings or thermals under your jeans for added warmth and add a pair of boots to pull the look together. Jeans can be paired with anything from a tunic to a sweater or even a wrap dress. Go ahead – have some fun and experiment.
  • One of the easiest ways to liven up your wardrobe is to add interesting accessories. Throw on a colorful scarf or wrap, clip on some chandelier earrings, stack on the beaded bracelets or necklaces. All these distract the eye from your burgeoning belly and highlight your favorite features instead.

  • No matter what the season, the key to any good maternity wardrobe is good support underwear. This is one area where compromise is not possible. You will need to splurge on well-fitting bras to support your growing breasts. In addition to this, winter demands thermal wear to keep you warm as well. Look for the new breed of seamless undergarments that are more comfortable and do not dig into your skin leaving unsightly lines.
  • With winter comes the holiday season and with it come parties galore. Just because you are pregnant does not mean that you have to hide indoors and refuse any invites. Remember this is your time to shine. Bling it up for the holidays and choose classy empire line or wrap dresses in jewel tones. Velvet, velour, chenille, and lace all jazzed up with some sparkle are surefire winners in the party circuit.
  • You may balk at the thought of investing in a winter coat just for one season but there are options available. Maybe you could check out eBay or other online sites for gently used maternity coats that are offered at half their original price? If you are lucky enough to be carrying your baby weight only in your tummy, you could even get away with using your regular coat but leaving a few buttons undone. If you do want to go ahead and buy a new coat, start shopping in early fall. Look for coats in classic cuts and fabrics and those that are warm and comfortable.

Where to buy maternity winter clothes?

The usual suspects at your local mall are always the best place to start. Some initial window-shopping will help you decide what you are looking for and fix on various looks. Once you are clear with your winter maternity wear shopping list, you can also look online. Sites such as OldNavy.com, MotherhoodMaternity.com, Target.com and Gap.com all offer maternity coats and jackets for great prices. Happy shopping!
