Since most women tend to develop a calcium deficiency during pregnancy while meeting the demands of the baby, calcium is essential for the mother as well. Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin that is responsible for carrying oxygen to the baby and different parts of the body. If the mother has medical conditions like hypertension or high blood sugar, certain steps are to be taken so as to minimize the risk to the baby. The usage of tobacco, alcohol and drugs must be refrained from completely as a part of prenatal care for the health of the baby and mother alike.

A balanced diet is essential with a good equilibrium of various nutrients essential for good health and the proper development of the baby. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, poultry and fish are highly recommended. Food that is difficult to digest like fatty or spicy food must be avoided as the digestive system becomes sluggish during pregnancy. To minimize the chances of high blood sugar, foods high in sugar content must also be avoided as the body cannot metabolize sugar quickly during pregnancy. Regular non-strenuous exercise helps to keep the body fit and flexible. A sufficient amount of rest is advisable. Overexertion and stress must be avoided completely. Routine follow-ups with the doctor are a must and prenatal care vitamins should be consumed religiously.
