White Discharge In Pregnancy
When a woman gets pregnant, her body undergoes many changes.
Vaginal discharge is one of the first changes that she usually experiences. This is known as leukorrhea, where the discharge is thin and white and resembles the white of a raw egg. In fact, it is quite normal for women to get a
white discharge in pregnancy and otherwise. As long as the discharge is clear, white, and odorless it is considered to be normal. However, it is quite natural for the amount of white discharge in pregnancy to be more than otherwise. This is because of the increase in the levels of estrogen as well as a higher flow of blood to the vaginal region. The white discharge consists mainly of cervical and vaginal secretions, normal bacteria flora from the vagina and old cells from the vaginal walls. As the pregnancy proceeds, the amount of the discharge increases. The discharge may also change in appearance, as labor approaches. This is because in the earlier part of the pregnancy, the cervical canal is filled out by cervical secretions which form a protective barrier, known as the “mucus plug”. But towards the end, when the cervix starts dilating, the mucus plug is expelled and a thin white discharge might be noticed. At times, it could even contain traces of blood.
The
white discharge during pregnancy can neither be stopped, nor controlled. However, panty liners can be used, to absorb it, which will prevent any embarrassment it may cause. A tampon should never be used, by pregnant women. It is also important to avoid any infections, by keeping the vaginal area dry and clean. While using toilet paper, it is important to wipe from front to back and not the other way around. Pregnant women should also choose to wear well-fitting cotton underwear. Tight clothes like regular jeans should be avoided. In order to avoid any risks or
vaginal infections, it is important to avoid douching, as it can upset the balance, of the vaginal flora. Douching can also introduce air into the circulatory system, through the vagina, causing some serious complications. Must read
