Late Period Negative Pregnancy Test
It is most frustrating to have a missed period and a negative pregnancy test, more so when you are trying to get pregnant. However, there are reasons why the test might be negative. Pregnancy tests detect the pregnancy hormone Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) in a woman’s urine. If the test used is of a lower sensitivity, it may only detect pregnancy when the hCG hormone reaches a certain level.

...Other factors like stress, hormonal imbalances, anxiety, sleeplessness, travel, and jet lag, thyroid problems, being overweight or underweight can all contribute to missing a period. You may also be testing too early; most tests are usually accurate one week after the missed period and not on the first day of the missed period. Reading the results before the complete reaction time is over also results in a negative pregnancy test. hCG develops at different rates in every woman so some women may test positive well before their period while others test negative even when the period is late. Research has also shown that in some rare cases hCG antibodies in the test do not react with the hCG hormone composition of a particular woman.
False Negative Pregnancy Test
A false negative pregnancy test is one that says you are not pregnant when in fact you are. Reasons for this are taking the test before your body has had time to secrete enough hCG to be measured. This could also occur if you have not used the test properly and not followed the instructions for testing. It is imperative that you read results only after the stipulated reaction time. Testing late in the day or drinking too much fluid and then testing can give a wrong reading too. Testing first thing in the morning is recommended as the urine contains the most concentrated sample of hCG.
Miscalculation of your period date could lead to wrongly assuming that your period is late, and therefore the resulting pregnancy test is negative. A positive pregnancy test will not occur until implantation occurs. This can happen between 6-12 days after ovulation. Low or falling hCG levels may also be indicative of an ectopic pregnancy or a problem with the pregnancy. If you suspect you are pregnant and get a negative pregnancy test then the best thing to do is either to test again after a week or contact your doctor. A negative pregnancy test result can often be misleading but keep the above factors in mind before becoming discouraged.
