  • Assuming you are pregnant, one of the main reasons that the test might show negative is that the test is of a lower sensitivity. A pregnancy test primarily detects the presence of the hormone hCG(human chorionic gonadotropin) in the urine, which is released once implantation has occurred. The test you have purchased might be able to detect pregnancy only after the hCG reaches a certain level.
  • Taking the test too early might be another reason. Your body will not start secreting the hormone immediately and so the test will show up negative
  • Another reason for a negative pregnancy test and missed period is that the test has not been taken properly. It is important to read the test after the stipulated reaction time that is mentioned on the test.
  • Learn how to properly use the test. Many women drink a lot of fluid before taking the test and this dilutes the amount of hCG in the urine. The best time to take the test is first thing in the morning. If this is not possible, avoid drinking too many fluids and hold your urine for a few hours before taking the test.
Your period could be late for a number of reasons. Stress is a major reason for missed or delayed periods in women. Thyroid problems could cause hormonal changes which could lead to a late or delayed period. Birth control pills and contraceptives could also make periods late/missed. Excessive production of prolactin hormones, being overweight, underweight are other reasons for a period being late. However, if you have a false negative pregnancy test and a missed period that is over two weeks later, do contact your doctor immediately for an examination and check up to determine the actual reason for this.
