Baby Teething Remedies

Teething is a process which begins in infants who are as young as two months old; however the first tooth may not appear until the child is about six months. A baby’s gums usually become sore due to the pressure of the emerging teeth. It is quite normal to find a blood blister around the child’s erupting tooth.

There are various baby teething home remedies to ease teething pain. A child may show some early symptoms of teething which may help you to prepare for teething in advance. The symptoms of baby teething include excessive drooling, restlessness and refusal of food. Sometimes the child might also constantly be touching the mouth to ease the pain of the growing teeth. In moderate to severe cases some children experience fever, runny nose, diarrhea and rashes on the body. As the teeth continue to form, the cells in the gum tissue begin to break down. The child thus feels the urge to bite and chew on things. There is a lot you can do to ease your baby’s discomfort. If you are skeptical about using allopathic medications, you can always make a switch to natural homemade remedies after consulting your doctor.

A tried and tested remedy for reducing your baby’s discomfort would be to apply diluted clove oil lightly on the gums, preferably when the child is asleep. Cloves contain essential oils which have a soothing and an almost numbing effect on the gums. You can let your child chew on a natural licorice stick; you can find one in a health food store. Some parents suggest applying pure vanilla extract to soothe the baby’s gums. The properties contained in pure and natural in vanilla is believed to help create a warm sensation which might provide temporary relief. Vanilla is also well-known to cure stomach diseases, thus the vanilla extract might also help in soothing your child’s tummy as well. It is important that you talk to your doctor before you decide to use any treatment, even if it is a home remedy.

Banana is a soft tender and a healthy fruit to chew on. You can refrigerate the banana for a while so that it is slightly cool before mashing it and feeding it to your child.   You can also wrap an ice cube in a towel and apply it on the gums from the outside of the mouth, on the cheeks; this should offer temporary relief. You can always let your child chew on a teething biscuit; you can either buy it from a store or bake some! Place a metal spoon in the refrigerator and allow it cool, let your baby have it; the cold metal against his gums will surely bring a smile across that cute face. You can also let your baby chew on fine carrot shavings.

Teething is a temporary process and will not last long. But these simple tricks can help parents comfort their babies throughout their teething process
