Are there complications with conceiving after an abortion?

(May 6, 2010)

Women who have gone through a proper surgical procedure of a medication based abortion, performed by medical experts in a clean and sterile environment, using the right equipment, should not face any physical problems or complications, when they try to conceive in the future. Complications may arise if the surgery is not performed properly, if there is any remaining tissue or if there are any infections, that are not treated in time. Therefore, properly performed abortions should not cause infertility problems in women.

However, in a few instances a woman may face some difficulty in conceiving if she has had multiple abortions in the past. Abortions or even other surgical procedures performed on the uterus, could lead to scarred tissues, that can make difficult for a woman to conceive. This is especially true if the scarring occurs close to her fallopian tubes. Another problem that may occur is the weakening of the cervix, as an abortion forces it to dilate and open. Again, a woman who has had multiple abortions faces a higher possibility of a weakened cervix. Medical experts can help the cervix to remain closed during the pregnancy, by a simple procedure.

Most average couples conceive within a year of trying actively. Many couples improve their chances of conceiving, by keeping track of when ovulation occurs. Women who have regular menstrual cycles usually ovulate fourteen days before their due dates. However, this can vary by a day or two. There are several over-the-counter ovulation predictors available, that can identify the exact day of ovulation. Women who are trying to conceive may also need to make few changes to their lifestyles, which include their eating habits, consumption of drugs, smoking, etc. Cutting of unhealthy habits improves a woman’s likelihood of conceiving.

Unfortunately, an abortion can be a very traumatic experience for some women, leaving physical as well as emotional scars. They are often burdened with guilt, which makes them worry that they may not be able to conceive ever again in the future. Therefore, after going through an abortion, it is best for a woman to undergo counseling to help her deal with her guilt and insecurities.

It is safe to say that most women who go through professionally performed abortions, without any problems or complications, should have no trouble in conceiving again, when they want to. However, before planning another baby, it is advisable for a woman to wait for a while and allow herself to recover from the experience, physically as well as emotionally.
