The first thing that a baby learns is to maintain their balance on their knees and hands. Moving backward and forward is the next thing that is figured out.

In the first three to six months very few babies show any true mobility.

A few try to crawl or drag themselves on their stomachs and move forward with the help of their arms. In the next six to nine months your baby learns to sit and stand with the help of some support. It is during this period that they actually begin crawling or even consider crawling. If your child does not crawl, there is no need to panic as this is only a way to assess if your child's motor development skills and muscles developing skills are shaping up well. If your child does not crawl, you could speak to your pediatrician about it.

When your child is 9 to 12 months old, he/she begins to move forward with the help of his/her arms. This is the start of the motor development in baby stages and crawling. Some get up on their knees and hands and crawl in a very efficient manner. They may or may not lift their abdomen from the floor. You also need not be too surprised if your child walks before he/she crawls and if your child does not crawl at all.

By the time your child gets to one year or so he/she will start walking and by the time he/she is one and a half year old, your child will start to walk without any help.

Your baby will go through various baby stages and crawling is one of them. This stage usually comes when the baby is able to sit without any kind of support, and this normally happens when your baby is about six to seven months of age. No matter what age your child is, make sure you are not fooled into believing that your child no longer needs to be supervised and can manage on their own.
