After delivery, a woman loses blood as the amount of blood in her body increases by 50% during a pregnancy. Hence a woman will experience bleeding postpartum few hours of delivery. This is known as Lochia which is derived from Greek meaning relating to child birth.

Lochia is made up of blood and other body fluids along with debris in your uterus that your body needs to get rid of. Postpartum bleeding could normally last for 2 to 3 weeks but in extreme cases it could last for 6 weeks. It is the same as your menstrual cycle however it is much heavier.

Conditions During Postpartum Bleeding

The Initial stage of postpartum bleeding includes a bright red color blood discharge from the vaginal area. This may last for up to two weeks. A woman could experience gushes of bleeding or a fair amount of blood at regular intervals. You may also see some clots which grape size comes are out. The color then changes to from bright red to pinkish and then to brown. During the texture of the blood reduces and becomes thinner. The final color is a yellowish white discharge. This will slow down over a period of time also the thickness of it will reduce. Postpartum bleeding mainly happens due from the blood vessels supplying the placenta. Many women are given a hormone in order to stop the bleeding after passing the placenta. Some warning signs which occur during postpartum bleeding are a strong or foul smelling discharge.

A woman could also experience some chills along with fever. The red discharge for some woman could last for more than a week with heavy abnormal vaginal bleeding.

Treatment For Postpartum Bleeding

Treatment for bleeding postpartum depends on the loss of blood from the body. If there is too much blood lost please consult your doctor immediately. Never use tampons as this may cause infection and will only increase the problem. Rather use a soft sanitary napkin that will absorb the blood. Rest also plays a vital role in recovering as this will stimulate the blood flow. So ensure to minimize activities such as standing and walking for too long. To avoid odor during discharge make sure that you clean yourself at regular intervals. However if the odor still persist with a strong smell you might have an infection which needs to consulted by a doctor. Allow your body to heal by not over stressing yourself. Change your pad at regular intervals.
