Another teen pregnancy health risk is that concerning the baby. The chances that teen moms give birth to babies that are premature are high. These babies are under weight and some may die. These children tend to have some problems later on in life which may be mental or physical in nature. If your child’s weight is under 5 ½ pounds, chances are that he/she will have some major birth defects.

Teen moms have high risks as well. They are under tremendous mental and physical stress. If their body is not fully developed then the chances that they will injure their pelvic bones and spine are high. Very often, teens exhibit irresponsible behavior and do not practice safe sex. As a result of this they may also expose themselves to sexually transmitted diseases. These diseases might be transmitted to the unborn child as well.

Teen Pregnancy Complications

Chances of complications during pregnancy are high among young mothers and the death rate is also high. The teenage mother generally is undernourished and suffers from labor that is premature and prolonged. In fact it has been found that a number of teenagers do not see a doctor in the first three months of pregnancy.  If you have indulged in habits such as smoking, drinking, and drug abuse your child might be born with some health problems.

Many teenage mothers do not continue with their education and drop out of school. As she is not equipped with any particular skills, the income of a teenage mother is not going to be great as well. She will then be dependant on her family or on some form of support from the government. The divorce rate for teenage marriages is also very high.
