"How do you like my new motorcycle?" Does your four year old boy ask this question while riding a broom? Don't be amazed with the kind of questions that your preschooler shoots you with. This is the development of symbolic thought. This is the most important cognitive development that happens in preschoolers.
Symbolic thought is the ability to symbolically represent objects and events. Preschoolers display this cognitive development with the help of make-believe play. Preschoolers are little inventors...
...who keep exploring new things. With cognitive development, preschoolers try to understand how things operate and function.
With cognitive development, preschoolers can also remember each and every event. They analyze the event carefully and try to apply it in present activities and also attempt to imply it for the future by anticipating the unknown. However, they cannot differentiate between fantasy and reality and live in a dream world of their own.
Do you want to know if the cognitive skills of your child are developing or not? Well, here are some signs that you can look out for in children. Please note that your child may not display all the developments at once; it can be one or two out of the below mentioned ones.
By the end of 3 years. By the end of three years, your child will show the following developments:
By the end of 4 years. As your child completes four years, he/she will be in a position to display more developments than a three year old.
By the end of 5 years. As your child completes five years of age, he/she will display more development. Five year olds can do things with much ease as compared to those younger in age group.
In case you feel that your child's cognitive development is not going on the right track, then it is better to consult a doctor to be on the safer side.
