When taking into consideration this period, one must make sure that the timing for intercourse was right; ensuring that the fertile period of the woman’s menstrual cycle was not missed. Ascertaining that the woman does not have any fertility issues is also essential when taking into consideration the inability to conceive a child. An inability to complete the act of lovemaking right up to ejaculation is an important indicator of infertility.

What Causes Infertility in Men

Male infertility is mainly caused by poor sperm quality and low sperm count. Erectile dysfunction also contributes to male infertility. Lifestyle plays a vital role when it comes to fertility issues. Unhealthy eating habits and vices such as smoking, drinking and drug abuse have the tendency to affect the sperm quality and sperm count, thereby increasing the risk of infertility. Advancing age, stress, obesity, genetic abnormalities and hormonal irregularities also hamper fertility levels in men. Certain medications and medical conditions such as varicocele and hydrocele also lead to male infertility.

Male Infertility Tests

The most common of all male infertility tests is a semen analysis.

In this form of testing, fresh semen is tested to evaluate the quality and motility of sperm. The sperm count is also checked to ensure that the quantity is adequate for fertilization and conception to take place. Blood tests may also be conducted to check the hormone levels in the blood stream. A physical examination as well as an ultrasound would be performed to check for any structural abnormalities. If no problem can be identified through these methods, genetic testing may be carried out to check for specific genetic issues that could be the cause of infertility.

Treating Infertility in Men

In the case of male infertility, exposure of the genital area to heat in the form of hot showers, hot compresses and tight undergarments should be avoided completely. Medication may be prescribed to improve sperm quality and sperm count as well as to prevent nutritional deficiencies and hormonal imbalances. Sufficient rest and exercise is also suggested. In case of irregularities, corrective surgery may be recommended. Depending on the cause of infertility, procedures such as in vitro fertilization and artificial insemination may be the best option for treatment of male infertility.
